Hut 8 and BITMAIN Expand Partnership

Hut8 a major North American Bitcoin mining operator, announced an expanded partnership with BITMAIN Technologies Ltd. to launch the U3S21EXPH, a next-generation ASIC miner. This new miner, scheduled for deployment in Q2 2025, will introduce direct liquid-to-chip (DLC) cooling within a U form factor, marking the first time BITMAIN has mass-commercialized a miner with such technology.

Hut 8 plans to utilize this model in a hosting deployment of ~15 exahash per second (EH/s), with the option to transition to self-mining through a structured purchase agreement. The deployment will leverage Hut 8’s custom-built data center infrastructure.

Revolutionary Features of the U3S21EXPH Miner

The U3S21EXPH introduces DLC cooling, previously used in high-performance computing (HPC) data centres, into Bitcoin mining. The miner is capable of achieving 860 terahash at an efficiency of 13 joules per terahash, representing a huge advancement in ASIC technology. The device is designed for HPC-style architecture, allowing deployment at densities of up to 180 kilowatts per rack.

By bridging the gap between Bitcoin mining and AI data centre infrastructure, Hut 8 aims to unlock synergies and increase flexibility in its operations.

Strategic Growth for Hut 8

The deployment of this new model is part of Hut 8's strategy to scale its compute capacity across Bitcoin mining and AI technologies. The ~15 EH/s deployment will increase Hut 8's hashrate under management from 18.5 EH/s to 33.5 EH/s, with the potential to further grow its self-mining hashrate to 20.6 EH/s through the purchase option.
