Core Lightning v25.02 Release Enhances Security and Stability

Core Lightning (CLN) has released v25.02, named “Onion Packet Filler Accreditation,” bringing improvements to stability, security, and functionality. Key updates include enhanced channel backups, expanded gRPC and REST support, and better XPAY plugin integration.

Why is this Important?

Enhanced Channel Security: The update improves static channel backups, enabling nodes to generate penalty transactions in the event of outdated state use.

Expanded gRPC & REST Access: Onion messages and channel state notifications enhance node communication.

Bug Fixes & Plugin Improvements: The XPAY plugin is now more stable, and blacklisted runes can be restored via relist for better channel management.

Security Upgrades: The setconfig command now separates runtime configurations for increased security.

For Users:

  • Channel backups now act as watchtowers to protect funds from penalty transactions.

  • Improved XPAY plugin ensures seamless payment handling.

  • Cleaner lightning-cli help output with reduced crash occurrences.

  • Better fund recovery from force-closed dual-funded channels.

For the Network:

  • Stricter checking on splicing improves interoperability with other implementations like Eclair.

For Developers:

  • clnrest is now a Rust plugin for optimized performance.

  • New API fields added to listpeerchannels for better channel limit tracking.

  • New notifications for real-time monitoring of plugin activity.

  • fetchinvoice now supports BIP353 DNS payment instructions.

“This release strengthens security and enhances user experience while continuing our mission to improve Lightning’s scalability and reliability.”
