Bitcoin is the Sole Decentralised Cryptocurrency, Says Tether CEO

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, the company behind the world's largest stablecoin (USDT), has made a strong assertion regarding Bitcoin's unique position in the cryptocurrency landscape. Speaking at the Bitcoin-only conference, BTC Prague, Ardoino emphasized that Bitcoin is the only truly decentralized cryptocurrency among the 14,000+ digital assets in existence.

Bitcoin's Decentralized Nature

Ardoino highlighted Bitcoin’s inherent decentralization as its defining feature. "Bitcoin is the only example of a currency that is solely governed by mathematical principles that are immutable," he stated. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, which often undergo periodic updates and changes driven by their developer communities, Bitcoin’s core structure and monetary policy remain constant. According to Ardoino, this stability is exemplified by Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins and its scheduled halving events every four years.

Certainty and Unchangeability

The Tether CEO underscored Bitcoin’s predictable nature as a cornerstone of its value proposition. "Bitcoin is about certainty," he said. "It’s like a clock that keeps ticking forever." Ardoino argued that while many digital assets claim to be decentralized, Bitcoin stands alone in its resistance to change and external influence.

Contrasting Views on Decentralization

Ardoino acknowledged that his perspective might be contentious, particularly in light of the broader cryptocurrency market, which includes a vast array of decentralized finance (DeFi) projects. DeFi aims to decentralize financial services through blockchain technology, challenging traditional financial systems. However, Ardoino and other industry figures, such as Jan3 CEO Samson Mow, maintain that DeFi projects do not match Bitcoin’s level of decentralization.

Scepticism Towards Memecoins

In the same interview, Ardoino expressed a critical view of the burgeoning memecoin sector—cryptocurrencies inspired by internet memes. "I like memes, but not memecoins," he remarked, positioning Bitcoin and memecoins at opposite ends of the cryptocurrency spectrum in terms of seriousness and utility.

BTC Prague 2024

Ardoino’s comments were made during BTC Prague 2024, an event dedicated exclusively to Bitcoin. The conference featured prominent industry figures such as former MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor, Blockstream co-founder Adam Back, and Bitcoin author Jimmy Song, among others. This exclusive focus on Bitcoin reflects a growing trend within the cryptocurrency community to distinguish Bitcoin from other digital assets.

While Ardoino's assertion that Bitcoin is the only decentralized cryptocurrency is open to debate, his remarks underscore a significant point of view within the crypto industry. As discussions about decentralization and governance continue, Bitcoin remains a central figure, often cited as the gold standard for decentralized digital currencies.
